Kerala Sees Slight Dip in Power Demand After Days of Record Consumption

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala has witnessed slight relief in electricity consumption after days of record-high demand driven by intense summer heat. The state’s daily power consumption has now fallen to 100.98 million units, while peak electricity demand was recorded at 5,332 megawatts.

According to official figures, Kerala received 48.46 million units of electricity from central generating stations. The state’s total internal power generation currently stands at 19.54 million units, of which 17.44 million units are being produced from hydroelectric projects.

Among the major hydel stations, Idukki Dam generated 6.08 million units, while Sabarigiri Hydroelectric Project contributed 4.12 million units.

Authorities said Kerala’s reservoirs currently hold enough water to generate 1,131.44 million units of electricity. However, with the state aiming to maintain a reserve capable of producing at least 650 million units by June 1, only around 481 million units worth of water will be utilised in the coming weeks.

With 26 days remaining in the current water year, officials have assessed the present reservoir levels as satisfactory. In addition to conventional sources, solar energy is also contributing to the grid, with 1.51 million units currently being supplied from solar generation.
