Kerala Police Launch PODA Scheme to Ensure Drug-Free Private Workplaces

Thiruvananthapuram: In a move reflecting the Kerala Model of social responsibility and proactive governance, the Kerala Police have rolled out the Prevention of Drug Abuse (PODA) scheme to address drug use among employees in private sector institutions across the state. The initiative is being implemented in collaboration with IT companies, with a strong focus on prevention, accountability, and workplace well-being.

The scheme aims to create drug-free workplaces and ensure a healthy, productive working environment. As part of the initiative, individuals joining private institutions will be required to submit a declaration at the time of appointment affirming that they will refrain from drug use. This will be followed by periodic drug testing at prescribed intervals.

If drug use is detected during these tests, employers are legally empowered to take disciplinary action, including termination of employment. The testing will specifically target narcotic and synthetic drugs, excluding alcohol and tobacco products. Notably, the use of synthetic drugs can be identified through scientific testing methods for up to four months.

Covering private establishments across the state, including IT parks, the PODA scheme represents a comprehensive and preventive approach aligned with Kerala’s broader anti-drug policy. By combining enforcement with institutional responsibility, the initiative seeks to promote ethical workplace practices, strengthen social accountability, and nurture a sustainable, drug-free culture, hallmarks of the Kerala Model of development and governance.
