Thiruvananthapuram: In response to the rising number of cybercrime cases in the state, Kerala Police has centralised the control of all cyber police stations under the Cyber Division Headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram.
The state government has approved the State Police Chief’s proposal to transfer administrative and operational control of 19 cyber police stations from the respective District Police Chiefs to the supervision of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Cyber Operations.
Police officials said the move is intended to bring uniformity and greater efficiency in handling cybercrime investigations across the state. According to the government order, all 19 cyber police stations will now report to the Superintendent of Police, Information Communication and Technology (ICT) Wing, functioning under the overall supervision of the IGP, Cyber Operations.
“This restructuring will enable the Cyber Division to directly monitor field operations, manage manpower and resources, provide technical support, and coordinate investigations more effectively. It also aims to address the challenges that existed under the earlier district-level control system,” the order said.
A senior officer clarified that cyber police stations will continue to register cases referred from other police stations within their districts. The only change is in their reporting structure—they will now function under the SP, ICT Wing. These stations will also handle cases identified by the Cyberdome wing of the Kerala Police and take up investigations of major cybercrimes.
According to official data, 1,677 cybercrime cases were reported in Kerala till August this year. In 2024, the state police had registered a total of 3,581 cybercrime cases.
Recently, the Kochi City Cyber Police Station registered a major case involving a businessman who lost 25 crore in an online investment scam. Four individuals were later arrested in connection with the fraud.
