Keralam Heatwave: Orange Alert in Four Places; Yellow Alert in Seven More

Thiruvananthapuram: The State Disaster Management Authority has issued Orange UV Alerts for four locations in Kerala after they recorded the highest ultraviolet index readings in the state over the past 24 hours. The affected locations are Konni (Pathanamthitta), Chengannur (Alappuzha), Changanacherry (Kottayam), and Munnar (Idukki). An Orange Alert, indicating UV index readings between 8 and 10, requires serious protective measures and extreme caution.

Yellow Alerts have been issued for Kottarakara (Kollam), Kalamassery (Ernakulam), Ollur (Thrissur), Thrithala (Palakkad), Ponnani (Malappuram), Beypore (Kozhikode), and Mananthavady (Wayanad).

UV levels peak between 10 am and 3 pm. The public is advised to avoid direct sun exposure during these hours, as prolonged exposure can cause heatstroke, skin diseases, and eye ailments. High UV levels can persist even under clear skies, and are typically elevated in highland areas, tropical zones, and near water bodies and sandy surfaces which reflect ultraviolet radiation.

Those requiring special caution include fisherfolk, motorcyclists, tourists, persons with skin or eye conditions, cancer patients, and those with compromised immunity. When going outdoors, wear hats, carry umbrellas, use sunglasses, and dress in full-sleeved cotton clothing. Rest in shade during breaks while travelling.
