Kerala Launches Eco-Friendly Menstrual Hygiene Program With Distribution of Menstrual Cups and Incinerators

Kollam: As part of the Nava Kerala Action Plan initiative, the Haritha Kerala Mission has launched a state-level program to distribute menstrual cups and incinerators to promote menstrual hygiene in an eco-friendly manner. The inauguration took place at Muttar Government Higher Secondary and Vocational Higher Secondary School, led by Finance Minister K N Balagopal.

The program aims to address environmental issues associated with disposable sanitary napkins by promoting the use of reusable menstrual cups. A budget of 5 crore rupees has been allocated for the initiative. Minister Balagopal emphasized that the cups are both health-friendly and environmentally sustainable.

Distribution targets include school students and Kudumbashree members. Dr. T N Seema, State Coordinator of Nava Kerala Action Plan-2, explained the project, while Dr. Rasna, Project Officer from Hindustan Latex Limited, detailed the menstrual cup program.

The initiative targets colleges, schools, and selected Kudumbashree units to promote menstrual hygiene and awareness. In the first phase, 1,68,955 menstrual cups and 322 scientifically designed napkin incinerators will be distributed.

Beneficiaries include five selected higher secondary schools per district, all government colleges, and Kudumbashree 'Ayalkootam' groups in 152 local self-governments participating in the 'Net Zero Carbon Kerala Through Public' campaign.

The program reflects Kerala’s push towards sustainable menstrual hygiene management while integrating environmental consciousness into public health initiatives.
