Master Plan to Reduce Road Accidents; Kerala Begins Scientific Modernisation of Major Junctions

Thiruvananthapuram: The State Government has begun a major initiative to modernise key road junctions across Kerala to reduce accidents and improve traffic flow.

In the first phase, the focus will be on busy junctions where congestion and accidents are frequent. Special attention is being given to identified “black spots” where road mishaps occur regularly. The Public Works Department has prepared a detailed master plan for the project, with financial support from the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB).

As part of the revamp, poorly designed junction layouts will be corrected and traffic signal systems will be upgraded. Clear zebra crossings, properly designed traffic islands and improved footpaths will be provided to ensure the safety of pedestrians. To improve night-time visibility, solar-powered lights and high-mast lighting systems will be installed.

The redesign of each junction is being carried out based on the guidance of the Road Safety Authority and with the support of traffic engineering experts. Speed regulation signboards and camera systems to prevent lane violations will also be introduced.

The government expects that the project will not only reduce accidents but also bring lasting relief to traffic congestion in major urban centres across the state.
