Thiruvananthapuram: Malaria is spreading across Keralam even as the Shigella outbreak continues, with 11 new cases confirmed on Wednesday alone, taking the total for the past month to 131. The majority of cases have been reported among people who arrived from other states. Even as the disease spreads, the Health Department has been accused of continuing to remain negligent.

The government is yet to take preventive measures against malaria. The previous LDF government had been working towards the goal of malaria elimination this year, but the fresh surge in cases over the past month is a cause for concern.

Seven more Shigella cases, 146 dengue cases and 30 leptospirosis cases were also newly confirmed in the state.
