Free Dialysis for Thousands: Kerala Conducts 64,000 Monthly Sessions Across 1,287 Machines

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala has emerged as a model state in providing precise and modern treatment for kidney patients. Facilities such as dialysis and kidney transplant surgeries are available across the state at standards comparable to developed nations. In addition to medical colleges, 112 government hospitals currently operate dialysis units, equipped with a total of 1,287 machines. These units handle over 64,000 dialysis sessions every month.

In the private sector, patients needing dialysis three times a week may have to spend around 4,500 rupees per session, amounting to 18,000 rupees per month. Government hospitals, however, offer these services either free of charge or at highly subsidised rates.

The state ensures that all dialysis units are equipped with essential infrastructure, trained doctors, nurses, and technical staff, as well as proper hygiene and reliable water and electricity supply. This financial year, 13 new units will be established in taluk and district hospitals that currently do not have dialysis facilities.

Mobile Dialysis Units for Remote Areas

Efforts are also underway to introduce mobile dialysis units in remote areas lacking such facilities, with the support of local self-governments and volunteer organisations. Additionally, the state is strengthening a peritoneal dialysis programme, a cost-effective alternative that patients can carry out at home, with the government covering the entire cost.
