Kerala Sets the Standard for Sustainable Tourism in India

Thiruvananthapuram: On National Tourism Day, as India celebrates its diverse landscapes and cultural wealth, Kerala stands out not only for its natural beauty but also for showing how tourism can be a force for sustainability, community empowerment, and cultural preservation. Over the past decade, the state has consistently earned national and international recognition, offering a model for other states to emulate.

Kerala, has turned tourism into more than just an economic activity. Its approach focuses on environmentally conscious practices, community engagement, and innovation. In 2022, the state’s STREET (Sustainable Tourism for Rural Empowerment and Environment Transformation) Project won the World Travel Market (WTM) London Global Award for initiatives such as plastic- free zones, water conservation, and post- pandemic tourism revival. That same year, the International Centre for Responsible Tourism (ICRT) recognised Kerala for promoting community-based tourism and diversified offerings.

Nationally, Kerala has been a regular winner at the National Tourism Awards, celebrated for rural tourism, heritage promotion, and eco-friendly homestays. The Kerala State Tourism Awards annually recognise excellence across sectors, from Ayurveda centres and adventure operators to heritage hotels and village homestays. In 2025, Kerala received the PATA Gold Award for digital innovation in tourism promotion, while the Outlook Responsible Tourism Awards highlighted its sustainable practices centred on culture and heritage.

What sets Kerala apart is the replicable philosophy behind its success. Projects like STREET transform villages into immersive tourism experiences, allowing visitors to engage with local crafts, cuisine, and traditions while generating sustainable livelihoods for residents. The state prioritises quality experiences over mere tourist numbers, proving that economic growth and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.

Kerala’s resilience also serves as a lesson for the country. After the 2018 floods and the COVID-19 pandemic, the state’s tourism sector implemented community- driven revival strategies and innovative campaigns. Recognition during these challenging periods acknowledged not only Kerala’s beauty but also its capacity to rebuild sustainably without compromising local communities or heritage.

As India charts its tourism future, Kerala demonstrates that awards and accolades are more than trophies, they endorse a philosophy that tourism should empower people, protect the environment, and celebrate heritage. For states across the country, Kerala’s journey offers a roadmap: sustainability, resilience, and respect for local communities are not just ideals, they are the foundation of a successful tourism model.
