Kochi: The Kerala High Court has stayed for one year the Perumbavoor Munsiff Court's eviction order concerning families residing on the Pariyathukavu Unnathi at Malayidamthuruthu.

The stay comes after the state government facilitated an agreement to rehabilitate the seven affected families and arrange for the construction of new houses for them through a sponsorship programme within one year.

The seven scheduled Caste families, who have lived in Pariyathukavu for generations, were facing eviction following a Supreme Court order in a land ownership dispute initiated by a private individual. The eviction had raised concerns over potential law and order issues, prompting the previous LDF government to approach the Kerala High Court seeking additional time.

Taking note of the settlement reached between the parties, the High Court closed the further proceedings in the petition. However, Justice T R Ravi clarified that the landowners would be free to approach the court again if the terms of the agreement are violated.
