Heavy Rain Likely in Keralam Today; Yellow Alert in Two Districts

Thiruvananthapuram: Heavy rain is likely in Keralam today, with a yellow alert issued for Idukki and Pathanamthitta districts. The weather department has warned of isolated spells of heavy rain in various parts of the state until September 21.

Heavy rain refers to rainfall of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm within 24 hours.

Strong winds are also likely along with the rain, with wind speeds expected to reach 40 to 50 kmph. People in hilly and low-lying areas have been advised to exercise extra caution as rainfall intensifies.

The weather department has also warned of the possibility of high waves and the sea swell phenomenon along the Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kozhikode and Kannur coasts. Coastal residents and fishermen have been urged to remain vigilant and follow the directions issued by the weather department and the disaster management authority.

Meanwhile, a cyclonic circulation has formed over northern Thailand and is likely to reach the northern Andaman Sea by the evening of September 18. The system is likely to intensify into a low-pressure area by the evening of September 19.

The low-pressure area is expected to gradually strengthen and move west-northwestwards over the next three to four days towards the southern Odisha-northern Andhra Pradesh coast.
