Heavy Rain Likely in Keralam Today; Yellow Alert Issued in Four Districts

Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rain in Kerala today and issued a yellow alert in four districts. Kottayam, Ernakulam, Kannur and Kasaragod have been placed under yellow alert, with isolated heavy rainfall expected.

Strong winds with speeds of up to 40 kmph are also likely along with the heavy rain. Rain continues in the state under the influence of the low-pressure area formed over the Bay of Bengal.

Meanwhile, the National Centre for Coastal Research (NCCR) has warned of the possibility of coastal flooding along the Keralam coast due to high waves associated with the swell surge phenomenon, known locally as ‘Kallakkadal’. Waves measuring 0.9 to 1.8 metres are likely along the Keralam coast from 8.30 am today until 11.30 pm tomorrow.

As part of the same phenomenon, waves measuring 1.3 to 1.5 metres are likely along the Kanyakumari coast until 11.30 pm today, creating a possibility of coastal flooding. Fisherfolk and coastal residents have been urged to remain vigilant.

As rough sea conditions are likely to intensify, the following precautions have been advised:

1. Residents in vulnerable areas should move to safer locations as directed by the authorities, as sea conditions could worsen.

2. Small boats and fishing vessels should not be taken out to sea during this period.

3. During the possibility of 'Kallakkadal' and high waves, bringing fishing vessels close to the shore can be as dangerous as taking them out to sea. Therefore, both launching and bringing vessels ashore should be avoided when waves intensify.

4. All activities centred around beaches, including tourism-related activities, should be completely avoided until the INCOIS warning is withdrawn.

5. Fishing vessels such as boats and country boats should be securely anchored at harbours. Maintaining a safe distance between vessels can help prevent collisions. Fishing equipment should also be kept secure.

6. Travel to beaches and recreational activities in the sea should be completely avoided.

7. Special caution should be exercised as coastal erosion is possible.
