Heavy Rain Continues Across Kerala; Two Dead, Orange Alert Issued in Five Districts

Thiruvananthapuram: Heavy rain and strong winds continued to lash several parts of Kerala on Monday, disrupting normal life and causing widespread waterlogging in low-lying areas. Authorities have confirmed two rain-related deaths and issued fresh alerts for multiple districts.
In Alappuzha, a fisherman lost his life after his boat capsized near the Arthunkal coast due to strong winds. The deceased, identified as Paul Devasia, a resident of Arthunkal, went out for fishing early in the morning. Although other fishermen managed to rescue him from the water, he later died, police said.
In another incident, Kokhan Misthri, a 45-year-old native of West Bengal, died after being struck by lightning at Mukanoor near Angamaly. He was working at a local workshop and was hit by lightning at his rented house around 8.15 am.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has updated its weather warnings, placing Kozhikode, Kasaragod, Kannur, Kottayam, and Pathanamthitta districts under orange alert, indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204 mm within 24 hours.
A yellow alert remains in effect for Wayanad, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam, Idukki, and Alappuzha districts, where rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm is expected. The IMD has also warned of strong winds across all districts.
Northern districts, including Kozhikode and Kannur, have reported continuous downpours since early morning. Water entered several shops near the KSRTC bus station in Kozhikode, while parts of Malappuram and the high ranges experienced intense rain and gusty winds.
In central Kerala, including Ernakulam and Alappuzha, the rain intensified during the morning hours. A section of the Aluva–Munnar road near Perumbavoor was damaged, forcing authorities to regulate traffic in the area.
The IMD forecast suggests that the rain will persist through Tuesday. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea due to rough weather and strong winds along the Kerala coast.
