Keralam Heatwave: Chief Minister to Hold High-Level Meeting Today to Assess Situation

Thiruvananthapuram: With temperatures across Kerala rising to alarming levels, the State Disaster Management Authority has issued an extreme caution advisory, and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has called on the public to treat the period between 11 am and 3 pm as a voluntary self-lockdown — urging people to stay indoors and avoid stepping out during peak heat hours. A high-level review meeting chaired by the Chief Minister is scheduled for 11 am today to assess the situation.

Several key decisions have already been taken: work restrictions during midday hours are to be strictly enforced, MGNREGS work will be suspended during peak hours, and traffic police personnel will be granted relaxation from wearing full uniform in the heat.

Daytime public events and temple festival celebrations held during daylight hours will also face restrictions.

The Health Department has advised the public to avoid direct sunlight, drink plenty of water, and wear light-coloured cotton clothing. Special caution has been urged for the elderly, children, and pregnant women. Livestock owners are directed to ensure shade and drinking water for animals.

Hospitals and local body institutions have been placed on high alert with extensive arrangements to handle heat-related medical emergencies. The Meteorological Centre has indicated the possibility of pre-monsoon showers from the day after tomorrow, which may offer some relief — though authorities have stressed that the immediate situation demands the fullest public cooperation and precaution.
