Kerala Records Hottest Temperature of the Year; Heat Warning Issued for 12 Districts

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is sweltering through its most intense heat of the year, with Palakkad recording the state's highest temperature of 2026 yesterday at 40.1°C — a full 3.4 degrees above normal. Punalur in Kollam district is also reeling under severe heat, with the mercury touching 39.8°C. The Meteorological Department has issued heat warnings for 12 of the state's 14 districts, with only Idukki and Wayanad excluded.

Health experts have flagged the surge in ultraviolet radiation as a serious concern. UV index levels are at their peak between 10 am and 3 pm, and direct exposure to sunlight during these hours should be strictly avoided. Outdoor workers, fisherfolk, motorcyclists, and tourists are advised to exercise particular caution.

The public has been advised to wear light-coloured, full-sleeved cotton clothing when stepping out, and to carry umbrellas, hats, and sunglasses. Those travelling are urged to take regular breaks in the shade and drink plenty of water. People with skin conditions, cancer patients, children, and the elderly are especially vulnerable and should avoid sun exposure entirely.

Authorities have also noted that UV reflection is significantly higher near water bodies and sandy areas, even under clear skies, warranting extra vigilance in such locations.
