UDF's Power Shock: Electricity Tariffs and Surcharges to Rise Sharply, Peak Hours to Be Extended

Thiruvananthapuram: The UDF government has dealt another shock to the people of Keralam by paving the way for a new hike in electricity charges. The Electricity Regulatory Commission has notified a new tariff policy that provides for a substantial increase in electricity rates and surcharges. The decision is expected to impose a major financial burden on ordinary people already struggling with the burden of taxes.
The new policy will remain in force for the next five years and will come into effect from April next year. The decision is expected to add to the cost of living and increase the financial burden on consumers. The inclusion of fuel surcharges in electricity tariffs is also expected to significantly raise household electricity bills.
The authorities have also decided to extend peak electricity consumption hours. From now on, the peak period will be from 6 pm to 11.30 pm.
This means ordinary people returning home after work may have to pay considerably more even for essential electricity use. The government's decision is being criticised for imposing an additional burden on people already struggling with frequent power outages.
