Thrissur: The Kerala government has issued an order granting financial assistance of ₹14 lakh to the families of those who died in the firecracker unit accident at Mundathikode in Thrissur. The amount includes ₹10 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund and ₹4 lakh from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).

For the injured, compensation will be provided as per SDRF norms, along with an additional ₹2 lakh each as immediate relief from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.

As per current official figures, 10 people have died and 14 others have been injured in the explosion. Accordingly, ₹40 lakh (₹4 lakh each) has been allocated from the SDRF for the families of the deceased, and ₹1 crore (₹10 lakh each) from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, as per the government order.

An additional ₹28 lakh has been sanctioned as immediate assistance for the 14 injured persons (₹2 lakh each). The order also directs the Thrissur District Collector to urgently submit recommendations in line with SDRF guidelines for further compensation.

The explosion occurred around 3.20 pm on Tuesday at a facility preparing firecrackers for the Thrissur Pooram. Preliminary findings suggest that intense heat caused explosives kept out for drying to catch fire, leading to the blast. Five sheds at the site were completely destroyed.
