Red Alert Issued Along Keralam Coast Over Swell Surge Phenomenon

Thiruvananthapuram: The National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has issued a red alert for all coastal districts in Keralam due to the swell surge phenomenon. The warning indicates the possibility of strong waves and the swell surge phenomenon along the coast. Coastal areas, particularly low-lying regions, are at risk of waterlogging and sea incursions.

Special caution has been advised in the following areas:

Thiruvananthapuram: Kappil–Pozhiyoor

Kollam: Alappad–Edava

Alappuzha: Chellanam–Azhikkal Jetty

Ernakulam: Munambam FH–Maruvakkad

Thrissur: Aattupuram–Kodungallur

Malappuram: Kadalundi Nagaram–Palappetty

Kozhikode: Chombala FH–Ramanattukara

Kannur: Valapattanam–New Mahe

Kasaragod: Kunjathur–Kottakkunnu

A high-wave and swell surge warning has also been issued for the Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep coasts. INCOIS has warned of the possibility of high waves and sea incursions along the Kanniyakumari coast as part of the phenomenon.

Fishermen and coastal residents have been urged to exercise extreme caution due to the possibility of sea incursions.

As the sea conditions are likely to worsen, people should move away from vulnerable areas to safer locations as instructed by authorities.

Small boats and fishing vessels should not be taken out to sea during this period. During periods when the swell surge phenomenon and high waves are expected, bringing fishing vessels back to shore can be as dangerous as launching them into the sea. Therefore, launching or bringing vessels ashore should be avoided when the waves intensify.

All beach-centred activities, including tourism-related activities, should be completely avoided until the INCOIS warning is withdrawn. Fishing vessels, including boats and country boats, should be securely moored at harbours. Maintaining a safe distance between boats can help prevent accidents caused by collisions. The safety of fishing equipment should also be ensured.

Travel to beaches and recreational activities in the sea should be completely avoided.

Special caution should be exercised due to the possibility of coastal erosion.
