Thiruvananthapuram: A warning has been issued about the possibility of high waves and the swell surge phenomenon along coastal areas of Keralam. The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) has advised fishermen and coastal residents to remain vigilant due to the possibility of sea incursions.
As part of the swell surge phenomenon, waves measuring 0.8 to 1.1 metres are likely along the Thiruvananthapuram coast, from Kappil to Pozhiyoor, from 5.30 pm on Tuesday until 11.30 pm on Wednesday. The Kanyakumari coast is also likely to experience sea incursions due to waves measuring 0.9 to 1.3 metres until 8.30 pm tomorrow.
Authorities have issued the following safety instructions:
1. As sea conditions are likely to worsen, residents should move to safer locations from vulnerable areas as directed by the authorities.
2. Small boats and fishing vessels should not be taken out to sea during this period.
3. During the possibility of the swell surge and high waves, bringing fishing vessels ashore can be as dangerous as launching them into the sea. Therefore, both launching and bringing vessels ashore should be avoided when waves intensify.
4. All beach-based activities, including tourism, should be completely avoided until the INCOIS warning is withdrawn.
5. Fishing vessels, including boats and small craft, should be securely moored at harbours. Maintaining a safe distance between boats can help prevent accidents caused by collisions. Fishing equipment should also be secured.
6. Travel to beaches and recreational activities in the sea should be completely avoided.
7. Special caution should be exercised due to the possibility of coastal erosion.
