Kerala Assembly Election Results 2026: UDF Takes Early Lead as Counting Progresses
Thiruvananthapuram: Early trends from the Kerala Assembly election indicate a lead for the UDF, even as both the UDF and the LDF show strength in their traditional strongholds.
After nearly two hours of counting, the UDF is leading in around 90 seats, while the LDF is ahead in approximately 45 constituencies. These trends are based on initial rounds, including postal ballot counting, and are subject to change as more votes are tallied.
Strong rooms were opened around 7:00 AM, and counting of postal ballots began at 8.00 am across 43 centers in the state. Counting of votes from Electronic Voting Machines began by 8.30 am, with clearer trends expected by 9.00 am.
Despite the early numbers, the LDF remains optimistic about securing a third consecutive term. Chief Electoral Officer U Ratan Khelkar stated that the entire counting process is expected to conclude by 5:00 PM, after which official results will be announced.
A total of 15,465 officials will oversee the count, including 140 Returning Officers and 4,208 micro-observers, with 32,301 security personnel including CRPF and Kerala Police battalions deployed at counting centres. Kerala recorded a voter turnout of 79.63 per cent, and 20,028 postal ballots have been received until May 1.

M. V. Govindan, the state secretary of the CPI(M), has said that the early trends emerging from postal ballot counting are in line with the party’s expectations.
Responding to the initial leads, Govindan indicated that the results so far reflect confidence among voters and align with the party’s assessment ahead of the counting process. He, however, noted that more clarity would emerge only after the counting of Electronic Voting Machine votes progresses further.
The remarks come as early trends show the Left Democratic Front (LDF) leading in several constituencies based on postal ballots.
