Kannur: A sessions court on Monday convicted a woman for the murder of her one-and-a-half-year-old child, who was thrown against a sea wall at Thayyil in Kannur. The court acquitted the second accused in the case, holding that the charge of conspiracy could not be proved.

The verdict was delivered by the Thaliparamba Additional Sessions Court. The first accused, Sharanya, who is also the child’s mother, was found guilty after the court held that the prosecution had clearly proved the charge of murder against her. The second accused, Nidhin, a friend of Sharanya, was acquitted due to lack of evidence.

The court observed that there was no proof to show that Nidhin had instigated or planned the murder with the intention of living together with Sharanya. As the prosecution failed to establish his role in the crime, he was given the benefit of doubt.

The incident occurred on February 17, 2020. The child, identified as one-and-a-half-year-old Viyan, was killed after being thrown onto the rocky shore near the sea at Thayyil, allegedly so that the woman could live with her lover. During the trial, the prosecution examined 47 witnesses. The verdict was pronounced after a trial that lasted several months.
