Thiruvananthapuram: The court has issued a summons to K Babu, Congress MLA from Thiruvananthapuram and former minister, in a case concerning illegal accumulation of wealth. He has been directed to appear before the PMLA court in Kaloor today.

The case pertains to assets amassed by K Babu beyond his known sources of income between 2007 and 2016. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had earlier seized assets worth 25 lakh rupees and filed a chargesheet in the matter. The ED submitted the chargesheet in the PMLA court.

Following a vigilance probe, it was found that K Babu had acquired assets worth 25.82 lakh rupees during the period from July 1, 2007, to January 25, 2016, exceeding his declared income. The vigilance department had registered an FIR and begun investigations against him in 2016, after which the ED also registered a case and initiated its inquiry.

The ED had recorded K Babu’s statement in January 2020. According to the agency, the illegally earned funds were used by K Babu to purchase movable and immovable properties, thereby incorporating them into his assets.
