Thiruvananthapuram: In a move reflecting the state’s forward-looking approach to education and skill development, the Department of Higher Education has launched the Internship Kerala portal, designed to provide students with meaningful employment opportunities alongside their studies.

A key milestone in the ongoing curriculum reforms of four-year degree programmes, the portal, developed in collaboration with the Kerala State Higher Education Council (KSHEC) and Keltron, offers a unified digital platform linking students, universities, and industries.

The portal is intended to narrow the gap between higher education and the workforce, acting as a practical bridge where learning meets real-world experience. More than six hundred institutions have already signed up, with registrations highest in sectors such as banking and finance, logistics, healthcare, tourism, textiles, media and entertainment, robotics, and sports and fitness.

Internships are now mandatory in the fourth and eighth semesters of four-year degree courses, and opportunities are available as paid, stipend-based, or unpaid positions. Students completing their internships receive two to four credits, depending on the duration.

Students can create personal profiles and choose internships based on their field of study and interests, while state and district coordinators, along with college programme and skill development coordinators, oversee implementation. Government employment and skill development agencies have also been empanelled to provide courses through the portal.

With a careful blend of innovation, skill development, and holistic education, the portal strengthens opportunities for students while fostering a model where learning, practical experience, and employment pathways naturally converge.
