Kannur: Notorious criminal Govindachami is being transferred to Viyyur High-Security Prison. The action follows his escape from the Kannur Central Jail. He was taken out of the Kannur Central Jail under tight security at around 7 a.m.

Govindachami, who escaped from the jail early Friday morning, was captured from Thalapp, which is about two kilometers from the Central Jail located in Pallikkunnu. He was serving a life sentence for a brutal crime in which he raped and murdered a young woman by pushing her off a train.

Govindachami, a native of Samathuvapuram in Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, was convicted for pushing a female train passenger off a train in February 2011, then raping and severely injuring her. The woman later succumbed to her injuries. On November 11, 2011, a Thrissur Fast Track Court sentenced him to death. However, in September 2016, the Supreme Court commuted the death sentence to life imprisonment.

He had attempted to claim mental illness in order to receive a reduced sentence. Govindachami also has other cases registered against him in Tamil Nadu under the alias "Charlie Thomas."
