Thiruvananthapuram: Health Minister Veena George has announced that the National Medical Commission has approved four super-specialty medical PG seats in the state’s medical colleges. Approval has been granted for two seats in M.Ch. Surgical Gastroenterology at Thrissur Medical College and two seats in DM Neonatology at Kozhikode Medical College. With this, a total of 133 medical PG seats have been granted during this government’s tenure. The necessary infrastructure to start these courses has been provided, and posts have been created.

M.Ch. Surgical Gastroenterology is a super-specialty course that provides surgical treatment for diseases related to the digestive system. It trains specialists in areas such as cancer, liver diseases, pancreatic disorders, and advanced laparoscopic surgeries. This course will also make liver transplantation surgery a reality at Kozhikode Medical College.

DM Neonatology is a super-specialty course focused on the management and specialized care of critically ill newborns. It trains specialists in caring for premature babies, managing NICUs, and handling respiratory and cardiac problems in neonates.

During this period, Konni, Idukki, Kasaragod, and Wayanad Medical Colleges were made operational. Twenty-one new nursing colleges have been started in the government and government-affiliated sectors. For the first time, medical and dental colleges were included in the national ranking list. The number of medical and nursing seats has increased significantly, with more than a thousand B.Sc. Nursing seats newly sanctioned in the government sector.
