Following the Paris Model, the Kozhikode Canal City Project will be Realised: Minister Riyas

Kozhikode: Minister of Public Works and Tourism, P. A. Mohammed Riyas, stated that, following the Paris model, the Kozhikode Canal City project will be realized, enabling passenger transport, cargo movement, and tourism through the Canoli Canal. The minister inaugurated the new bridge built along the canal. He also mentioned that Rs 73.21 crore has been allocated for the first phase of development work for the Canal City.

Development works are underway to transform Calicut into a modern city. For the development of 12 roads in Kozhikode, the government has allocated Rs 1,312.67 crore. The government has prioritised the development of Kozhikode like never before. In Kerala, within five years, the aim was to construct 100 bridges; however, more than 150 bridges have been completed. The new bridge will benefit the entire city of Kozhikode.

The ceremony was presided over by Ahmed Devarkovil, MLA. The chief guests included Mayor O. Sadashivan, Deputy Mayor S. Jayashree, and K. Bijunath, member of the Kerala Human Rights Commission. E. G. Viswaprakash, KRFB North Circle Leader, and J. Shanu, Assistant Executive Engineer, also spoke at the event. Representatives, political party members, party leaders, and officials participated in the ceremony.

The new bridge in Kozhikode connects with the Meenchanda Mini Bypass. Construction began in 2022 after the KIIFB allocated Rs 60 crore. The bridge, constructed along the Canoli Canal at a cost of Rs 16.53 crore, is 195 meters long and 11 meters wide, featuring an arch design. Approach roads have been provided on both sides, and land acquisition cost Rs 40 crore. The Kerala Road Fund Board was responsible for construction.

With the completion of the new bridge, access to areas such as the railway station, Palayam, Thali, and Kallai will be much easier. Since the Canoli Canal is part of the National Waterway, the design of the main bridge ensures the required clearance height.
