Farmer Killed in Wild Elephant Attack in Athirappilly

Thrissur: A 65-year-old farmer was killed in a wild elephant attack in Athirappilly, Thrissur, marking yet another incident of human-wildlife conflict in Keralam.

The victim has been identified as Mohanan, a resident of Pullarkkattu in Vettippara. The attack occurred in the Vaishery area of Athirappilly at around 3 am on Saturday.

According to local residents, the elephant had entered the area and was damaging crops near Mohanan’s house. He reportedly attempted to drive the animal away using a flaming torch when the elephant charged at him.

Mohanan sustained severe injuries in the attack and was rushed to a nearby hospital. However, doctors were unable to save his life.

His body has been shifted to a private hospital in Chalakudy for post-mortem procedures. The remains will be handed over to the family after the completion of legal formalities.

Residents said a wild elephant had been spotted in the area on previous days as well, and complained that elephant incursions have become increasingly frequent. They also pointed to the growing menace of wild boars, which regularly damage agricultural crops in the region.

The latest fatality has once again raised concerns over escalating human-animal conflict in forest fringe villages of Keralam, with locals demanding stronger measures to protect lives and livelihoods.
