Defamatory Remarks Against U Prathibha: Election Commission Seeks Report from Collector

A Irshad, U Prathiba
Thiruvananthapuram: The Election Commission intervened in the defamatory remarks made by UDF leader against LDF candidate in Kayamkulam Assembly Constituency, U Prathibha. The Commission has sought an urgent report from the Alappuzha Collector and instructed that actions be taken and communicated before noon.
The remarks were made by the UDF constituency convenor and Muslim League leader, A Irshad, who alleged that Prathibha was using her physical appearance and oratory skilld to contest in the election. Prathibha, along with the Democratic Women's Association, had filed a complaint with the Election Commission against the insulting remarks that demeaned her womanhood.
On Wednesday, during a UDF convention, Irshad made harsh anti-women comments, and none of the other leaders present corrected him. The comments were made in the presence of AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal, DCC President B Babu Prasad, and UDF candidate M Liju.
Following the news coverage and public outrage, Irshad expressed regret. However, U Prathibha stated in a press conference that simply apologising would not end the matter. Due to the widespread protests, Irshad has been removed from his position as the constituency committee chairman.
