Thiruvalla: Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil was denied bail on Monday in the third rape case registered against him, with the court declining to consider his bail plea at this stage.

The Thiruvalla Magistrate Court said bail could not be granted without examining the report of the Special Investigation Team probing the case. The court directed that the MLA be produced before it on Tuesday.

The court will also take up on Tuesday the Special Investigation Team’s plea seeking custody of Mamkootathil. The prosecution has sought seven days’ custody, citing the need for further evidence collection.

According to the prosecution, the accused needs to be taken to a hotel in Thiruvalla where the survivor has stated the assault took place, as part of the evidence-gathering process. The prosecution also informed the court that there are indications the assault was recorded on the accused’s mobile phone, and that custody is required to recover and examine the device and related evidence.
