Kochi: The Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) and Cochin Shipyard Ltd. have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Centre of Excellence in Shipbuilding Technology. The initiative is supported by the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme of Cochin Shipyard, with a funding of Rs. 3.53 crore.

The proposed centre will serve as a hub for advanced research, skill enhancement, and innovation in shipbuilding and allied technologies. It will focus on bridging the existing gap between academic research and industrial requirements, ensuring students and professionals are equipped with relevant, industry-ready skills.

The centre will be focusing on the areas such as, software development, skill development and upskilling programmes, digitisation initiatives and academic-industry collaborative research to develop cost-effective, sustainable, and technologically advanced solutions for the maritime sector.

At a formal event held at the CUSAT campus, Cochin Shipyard Managing Director Madhu S. Nair handed over the signed MoU to CUSAT Vice-Chancellor Dr. M. Junaid Bushiri. Speaking on the occasion, Madhu S. Nair emphasized the importance of nurturing a skilled talent pool and fostering innovation to keep pace with the rapidly evolving global maritime industry.

“Through this collaboration, we hope to empower young engineers and researchers with practical knowledge and hands-on experience in shipbuilding technology,” he said.

Dr. Junaid Bushiri highlighted the academic significance of the centre, saying, “The facility will enable CUSAT to become a knowledge and innovation partner to one of India’s leading shipyards. This will open new avenues in research, internships, and job placements for our students.”

Construction of the centre is expected to begin soon, with initial programmes set to roll out in phases. Once operational, the Centre of Excellence will not only serve students and researchers of CUSAT but also act as a resource centre for other institutions and industry professionals across the country. suggest title, slug, blurb and detailed keywords placed with comma
