Thiruvananthapuram: CPI(M) leaders visited SFI student leaders who were injured in a police action during the organisation’s march to Kerala University. CPI(M) Central Committee member K K Shailaja and state committee member and CITU state secretary V Sivankutty visited SFI state secretariat member Vaishnavi Shaji and Central Committee member Arya Prasad.

The leaders enquired about their health and condemned the police action. SFI state secretary P S Sanjeev and president M Sivaprasad accompanied them.

The police carried out a severe lathicharge against the SFI march on Tuesday, which was held in protest against the Governor’s attempts to saffronise universities in Keralam and the UDF government’s support for the move.

During the police action, Arya Prasad sustained a head injury and lost consciousness after being hit with a baton. Vaishnavi Shaji suffered a serious injury below her eye. Vaishnaya, a district committee member, also sustained injuries to her face and lips. Several other students were injured in the lathicharge.

The police stopped the march in front of the university gate and used a water cannon against the students without provocation, followed by a brutal lathicharge. Male police officers attacked female students without showing any consideration that they were women.
