Priyanka Gandhi's Wayanad Visit: Wayanad CPI(M) Slams Priyanka Gandhi for ‘Inaction’ After Landslide Disaster

Mananthavady: CPI(M) Wayanad district secretary K Rafeeq has publicly questioned the Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi over the alleged lack of financial and political intervention and assistance for victims of the Chooralmala–Mundakkai landslide disaster.

In a Facebook post, Rafeeq criticised the MP, who recently visited Wayanad after a considerable gap, asking why no funds from the MP Local Area Development (MPLAD) scheme had been allocated for disaster relief.

“Why have you not given even a single penny from the MP fund for the disaster victims? Why have you not even considered them as human beings?” he wrote.

Rafeeq pointed out that several MPs who do not represent Wayanad had contributed to the rehabilitation efforts. According to him, MPs including John Brittas, V Sivadasan, K Radhakrishnan, A A Rahim, P P Suneer, P Santosh Kumar and Jose K Mani donated amounts ranging from ₹25 lakh to ₹1 crore from their MP funds to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for the rehabilitation of the Chooralmala–Mundakkai victims. In addition, they contributed one month’s salary, amounting to ₹1.10 lakh each.

“Now let me ask you — what did you give?” Rafeeq asked in the post.

Describing the landslide as one of the most devastating in the country, Rafeeq said the disaster occurred within the constituency represented by the MP and argued that more proactive intervention was expected. He stated that the MP could have exerted pressure on the Centre to write off loans taken by disaster victims from nationalised banks.

“It is regrettable that you could not even make a strong intervention in Parliament on this issue,” he wrote.

Rafeeq further questioned how the MP could address disaster victims without responding to these concerns, adding that the people of Wayanad were closely observing the situation.
