Kochi: CPI(M) Ernakulam District Secretariat member K S Arunkumar has filed a complaint with Ernakulam Central Police against individuals who fabricated and circulated fake news cards using images of CPI(M) State Secretary M V Govindan on social media.

The fake cards falsely portray Govindan as having said that women in CPI(M) would not use the free travel facility introduced on KSRTC buses and would instead pay their fares. Neither Govindan nor the CPI(M) has made any such statement, the complaint states.

The complaint names multiple social media profiles including Kavitha Suresh, Tommy Veranikkal, and Jils, among others, for creating and spreading the fabricated content. The complaint alleges that fake statements are being manufactured in the party's name, with documents specially prepared to lend them authenticity before being circulated across platforms. It demands that the circulation of such cards on social media be stopped and that those engaged in character assassination and defamatory propaganda be investigated and prosecuted under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Information Technology Act.
