Thiruvananthapuram: The Congress has come out in support of the BJP’s efforts to evict the MLA office of Vattiyoorkavu legislator V K Prasanth. Congress leader K Sabarinathan demanded that Prasanth vacate his MLA office located at Sasthamangalam, arguing that Prasanth has space available at the MLA hostel. Sabarinathan justified his stance while overlooking the fact that it is not easy for ordinary people, including those coming to submit routine complaints, to freely access the MLA hostel.

Responding to Sabarinathan’s remarks, V K Prasanth clarified that there are practical difficulties in using the MLA hostel room as an office. He said the current MLA office is situated at one end of the constituency, but Sasthamangalam was chosen precisely because it has good transport connectivity and is easily accessible to people from all sections of society. Prasanth added that no complaints had been raised about the office till now.

Prasanth explained that the building in Sasthamangalam was selected to ensure that constituents could approach the office at any time with ease. Hundreds of people visit the office daily, and it has been functioning smoothly there for the past seven years. He noted that permission to operate in the building is valid until March 31. According to Prasanth, the attempt to shift the office began only after the BJP came to power in the city corporation, suggesting it is part of a political agenda. He also questioned why leaders like Sabarinathan are supporting such moves.

Addressing allegations spread by the BJP on social media, Prasanth said claims that he spends only 820 rupees out of the 25,000 rupees allotted for office rent are false. He pointed out that Kerala MLAs receive one of the lowest allowances in the country and that the 25,000 rupees is not meant solely for rent but covers various office-related expenses.

It was BJP councillor R Sreelakha of the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation who recently demanded that Prasanth vacate the office.
