Thiruvananthapuram: The recent suicide of K. Anil Kumar, former Thiruvananthapuram-Thirumala Councillor and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) district general secretary, has taken a new turn, as party spokesperson M.S. Kumar publicly linked the BJP to the tragedy in a Facebook post. According to his post, Anil’s death was primarily driven by financial distress caused by unpaid loans.
In his post, Kumar said that Anil had extended loans to around 70 individuals, most of whom were BJP members, and claimed that 90% of those who failed to repay belonged to the party. The stress of trying to recover these funds, combined with the non-cooperation from leaders he had supported, created unbearable pressure for Anil, ultimately leading to his decision to end his life.
Kumar described Anil as a young, honest, and dedicated political worker who had the potential to reach great heights but was overwhelmed by the circumstances surrounding his involvement in cooperative initiatives. He noted that the cooperative sector in Kerala had been facing severe challenges, with institutions like Karuvannur and BSNL-affiliated groups being targeted and collapsing. This led to a withdrawal of investments, leaving Anil and others who had extended loans in a difficult position.
The Facebook post also criticized certain media reports and personal attacks that Kumar believes exacerbated the situation, creating an impression that their cooperative group had failed and prompting many investors to withdraw their funds. According to Kumar’s post, even those who promised support ultimately did not cooperate, which added to Anil’s mental burden.
“It have also happened because those whom he expected would stand by him failed to cooperate and moved away. Poor Anil was forced to take harsh measures, even forgetting his own children. He should not have had to provide financial help, but at the very least, he could have helped recover the money from those who had taken loans and not repaid. That, too, was not done, and that is the main point. After death, placing a wreath on the chest is not political work,” the facebook post read.
He further stated that he intends to publicly disclose the names of those who defaulted on loans and the amounts owed, aiming to hold them accountable. In closing, Kumar warned against extending financial assistance to those unlikely to repay and urged the public to be cautious in identifying leaders who exploit funds for political purposes.
