Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Finance Minister K N Balagopal said the state budget aims to ensure inclusive social progress, addressing the needs of all sections of society, from children to the elderly, while focusing strongly on job creation and long-term economic stability.
Speaking after receiving the printed final copy of the budget from officials, the minister noted that Kerala must strengthen its economic foundation in the context of changing global conditions. He referred to international trade issues such as tariff wars and agreements with the European Union, as well as the rising trend of migration abroad, saying these factors make it essential for the state economy to become more resilient. He expressed confidence that the budget would leave a positive impression on the public.
Balagopal also said Kerala’s political history saw a shift when the same government was elected for a second consecutive term, breaking the earlier belief that governance performance would not influence voting behaviour. Over the past decade, he said, people have come to trust that the Left Democratic Front (LDF) government implements what it promises. According to him, the LDF announces only what is achievable and ensures that declared projects are carried forward, resulting in continuity in development. He said this approach is reflected in the state’s progress so far.
The minister added that if the LDF returns to power again, projects that are economically feasible and practical will be prioritised, keeping in mind the financial condition of the state. He described the budget to be presented as realistic and implementable.
On infrastructure, Balagopal said Kerala welcomes high-speed rail projects in any form or name. He clarified that the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) is a different model and can operate through metro rail corridors, indicating the state’s openness to modern high speed transport solutions.
