Thiruvananthapuram: In an extraordinary gesture of human compassion, the heart of 25-year-old Amal Babu, whose life was abruptly cut short by a sudden accident, now beats within 33-year-old Ajmal, offering him a remarkable second chance. The transplant, performed at Ernakulam’s Lissie Hospital, represents more than a medical achievement, it is a story of hope, generosity, and the profound capacity for human kindness.

Ajmal’s life had been hanging by a fragile thread since a severe heart attack earlier this year. Medical experts had made it clear that only a heart transplant could sustain him. At the same time, in Thachottukavu, Malainchirayil, Amal Babu’s own life ended in tragic circumstances on the night of September 12. Returning home from work, his motorbike collided with a car near Kundamankadavu, leaving him brain-dead. Amid immense sorrow, his family made the extraordinary choice to donate his organs, transforming their grief into a lifeline for others.

On Thursday, Amal’s heart began its final journey. Departing Thiruvananthapuram at 1.20 pm by air ambulance, it arrived in Ernakulam within the hour. Police swiftly cleared the route to Lissie Hospital, ensuring the precious organ reached the surgical team without delay. Under the meticulous care of Dr. Jacob Abraham, Dr. Jeevesh Thomas, Dr. Jo Joseph, and Dr. Arun George, Amal’s heart was transplanted into Ajmal. Within three hours, it began to beat steadily, restoring life to a body that had teetered on the edge of mortality.

Amal’s generosity extended beyond his heart. His liver and kidneys were also given to patients in urgent need, creating new opportunities for survival across the state. The act of giving, carried out with dignity amid tragedy, resonated widely, earning heartfelt appreciation from officials, including Minister Veena George.
