Gunfire Incident at White House Dinner Triggers Evacuation of Trump, World Leaders React

Washington DC: World leaders expressed shock and relief on Sunday after a gunman opened fire at the annual White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington DC on Saturday evening, triggering the dramatic evacuation of President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance and senior Cabinet members from one of the most high-profile gatherings in the US political calendar.

At approximately 8.40 pm local time, the suspect was confronted by security near the main magnetometer screening area of the Washington Hilton, while dinner was being served inside the main ballroom. He ran past the security checkpoint and fired at least one shot before being chased and apprehended. The suspect was identified as Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old from Torrance, California, who worked as a teacher and video game developer and is a graduate of the California Institute of Technology.

One officer was shot but was saved by a bulletproof vest, Trump told reporters at the White House. Asked whether he believed he was the suspect's target, Trump replied: "I guess."

Narendra Modi, said he was relieved to learn that President Trump, the First Lady and Vice President are safe and unharmed.

Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the incident, addin that he was "shocked by the scenes at the White House Correspondents' Dinner in Washington overnight."

"Any attack on democratic institutions or on the freedom of the press must be condemned in the strongest possible terms," he wrote on X.

French President Emmanuel Macron also reacted to the attack. "The armed attack targeting the president of the United States last night is unacceptable. Violence has no place in a democracy," he said on X.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wrote on X that he and his wife "were shocked by the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump," adding that they were relieved the president and First Lady were safe and expressing wishes for the speedy recovery of the wounded officer.

Venezuela's acting president Delcy Rodriguez condemned the attempted aggression against Trump and Melania, while Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum wrote that "violence should never be the answer."

The suspect will be arraigned on Monday facing charges of using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon.
