Caracas: The death toll from the two powerful earthquakes that struck Venezuela last month has risen to 5,069, authorities said on Friday, as recovery operations continue in the worst-affected areas.

The interim government of President Delcy Rodriguez said the number of injured remained unchanged at 16,740 over the past 11 days. The increase in fatalities followed ongoing search, recovery and debris-clearing operations, particularly in the coastal state of La Guaira, which bore the brunt of the twin earthquakes near the Caribbean Sea.

Authorities said 1,331 aftershocks have been recorded since the 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes struck on June 24.

The government added that 856 buildings have been damaged, including 190 that collapsed completely. Hundreds of other structures, including bridges and roads, also sustained significant damage.
