Eight Wounded in Shooting Outside School in Turkey, Suspect Detained

Ankara: An attacker opened fire outside a high school in western Turkey's Manisa province on Tuesday, wounding eight people, including students, according to local media reports.

The shooting took place around 8 am local time near the Inci Uzmez Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School in the Turgutlu district, close to the resort city of Izmir. The Manisa governor's office confirmed the gunfire in the vicinity of the school. Broadcaster NTV reported that one of the wounded was in serious condition. The assailant initially fled the scene, prompting a search by police and medical teams and a tightening of security around the school, though officials later said a suspect had been detained. CCTV footage aired by Turkish media showed a man in dark clothing carrying what appeared to be a rifle near the school. The motive for the attack was not immediately known.

The incident follows a string of school shootings in Turkey this year, including an attack in the southeastern province of Sanliurfa, where a former student opened fire at his old high school, wounding 16 people before taking his own life when confronted by police. In April, a 14-year-old killed nine students and a teacher at a school in Kahramanmaras province before dying at the scene, in the deadliest such attack in the country's history.

The recent violence has caused public outrage, prompting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to dismiss a deputy education minister and pledge tighter gun-control measures.
