Washington DC: In response to a US Supreme Court ruling overturning additional tariffs on various trading partners, President Donald Trump has announced a new 10% global tariff. The decision follows his condemnation of the Supreme Court's judgment, which he called "disgraceful."

The new tariff, which will be imposed on all trading partners, comes under the provisions of a 1974 law that allows the president to temporarily impose surcharges for 150 days to address the economic deficit. Trump also confirmed that the previously imposed tariffs on several countries will remain in effect.

The Supreme Court ruled that Trump’s massive tariffs on foreign nations were issued under a law intended for national emergencies, not general trade policy. The court emphasized that the US Constitution grants the authority to issue taxes and tariffs solely to Congress, not the president.

Chief Justice John Roberts and the majority of the court cited earlier rulings, arguing that the president could not impose such sweeping tariffs without explicit congressional authorization. The ruling marked a significant check on presidential powers regarding trade policy.

Despite the ruling, Trump’s decision to implement a 10% tariff on all trading partners under the 1974 law reflects his ongoing resistance to the court’s decision. The president reiterated that he believes the tariffs are necessary to address the country’s trade imbalance and to protect American industries.
