Madrid: Spain's leftist government has reportedly closed its airspace to US military aircraft participating in operations against Iran, escalating its non-involvement stance. This follows Madrid's earlier refusal to allow American use of shared bases like Rota and Moron, prompting the relocation of about 15 US planes.

Defense Minister Margarita Robles told media that 'the bases are not authorised, and of course neither is the use of Spanish airspace for actions related to the war in Iran". It was also informed that the transit or landing of planes is allowed only in case of an emergency. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez labeled the US-led actions as reckless and lacking international legitimacy, prioritizing Spain's sovereignty.

President Donald Trump has earlier threatened reduced trade ties with Spain over the base denial. The airspace ban forces US planes to detour around Spain en route to West Asia targets. This move by Spain will further strain the relation between the NATO allies.
