London: The London Metropolitan Police have launched a criminal investigation against former UK Business Secretary Peter Mandelson over allegations that he leaked highly classified government information to the notorious sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Scotland Yard initiated the probe following explosive revelations contained in the Epstein files recently released by the US Department of Justice.

Mandelson is accused of abuse of official position, a grave offence that could carry a life sentence if proven.

According to the disclosures, during the 2008 global financial crisis, Mandelson allegedly shared confidential details of internal British government discussions on bankers’ bonuses and economic stimulus packages with Epstein. The files also indicate that information related to the Euro bailout package was leaked a day before its official announcement.

Bank statements reportedly suggest that Mandelson received approximately 75,000 dollars from Epstein, though Mandelson has claimed that he has no recollection of receiving such payments.

Amid mounting political fallout, Mandelson resigned from the House of Lords on Tuesday. Reacting sharply, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Mandelson had “betrayed the nation” and announced plans to bring special legislation to revoke his peerage.

As part of the investigation, police will examine Mandelson’s digital devices, and statements will also be recorded from senior figures, including former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

The controversy has also reignited political criticism of Starmer’s earlier decision to consider appointing Mandelson as Britain’s ambassador to the United States, further intensifying the crisis.
