Pakistan Extends Austerity Measures Amid West Asia Tensions

Islamabad: Pakistan has extended its austerity measures until June 13 amid continuing economic pressure and uncertainty linked to tensions in West Asia.

The decision follows the reported failure of talks between United States and Iran, which were held with mediation from Pakistan in an effort to ease the regional conflict. The Pakistani government had first introduced cost-cutting measures in March, and the restrictions are now being tightened further.

Key steps include a 50 percent reduction in fuel allowances for official vehicles, keeping nearly 60 percent of government vehicles off the roads, and a complete ban on non-essential foreign travel by government officials.

Authorities, however, clarified that ambulances and public transport services would remain exempt from the restrictions to avoid disruption to essential services.

The extension of the austerity measures comes as uncertainty continues in the region after reported peace proposals put forward by Iran were rejected by Donald Trump. Officials fear that prolonged instability in West Asia could further strain fuel supplies and economic conditions in Pakistan.
