New York Mayor Mamdani Condemns US Detention of Venezuelan President Maduro

New York: New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has strongly condemned the US attack on Venezuela and the detention of President Nicolas Maduro, describing the action as “an act tantamount to war.” In a post on X, Mamdani said that unilaterally attacking a sovereign nation amounts to a violation of both federal and international law.

US President Donald Trump had announced yesterday that Maduro and his wife would be brought to New York and subjected to legal proceedings. It was in this context that Mamdani, who has been sharply critical of Trump’s policies, spoke out strongly against the move.

“I have been informed about the US military’s capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, and the move to detain them in federal custody in New York City. Unilaterally attacking a sovereign nation constitutes war and is a violation of federal and international law. This blatant attempt to overthrow that country’s government directly affects not only people abroad but also tens of thousands of Venezuelans living in New York. The safety of those communities, and of every New Yorker, is my priority. My administration will continue to monitor the situation and issue relevant guidance,” Mamdani wrote on X.

US President Donald Trump launched an attack on Venezuela on Saturday morning through what he described as a special military operation and captured Maduro and his wife. Trump said at a press conference that the United States would now govern Venezuela. The military action has sparked strong protests across the world.
