Nepal Floods: Govt Seeks ₹200 Crore in Aid; UNICEF Says Children Were Worst Affected

Kathmandu: Nepal has approached the United Nations’ Loss and Damage Fund seeking $20 million (200 crore rupees) in climate compensation following the devastating flash floods that hit the country. Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal said Nepal accounts for less than 0.1 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, yet is facing some of the most severe impacts of climate change.

More than 1,300 people were killed and over 5,500 remain missing following landslides and flash floods in Tibet and Nepal at the end of August. The total cost of the flood damage is initially estimated to exceed Rs 47,000 crore ($5 billion).

The government says more than 20,000 homes will have to be rebuilt, major highways restored and some villages along riverbanks relocated to safer, higher ground.

UNICEF has pointed out that children have been among the worst affected by the disaster. At least 22,000 children urgently need drinking water and sanitation facilities. The destruction of drinking water and sewage systems, along with overcrowding in shelters, has increased the risk of waterborne and infectious diseases spreading.

Around 2,600 children under the age of five are estimated to require treatment for malnutrition. Pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers also need specialised nutritional and healthcare support.

UNICEF said children who have lost their homes and relatives are also facing severe psychological distress. At least 107 children are reported to have lost their parents.

The risk of child trafficking, exploitation and sexual abuse has also increased. UNICEF has called for the urgent provision of safe spaces for children, temporary learning facilities and adequate nutrition.
