Mayon Volcano Ash Fall Forces Evacuation of 300+ Families in Philippines

Manila: More than 300 families have been evacuated to safety after Mount Mayon in the Philippines emitted large quantities of volcanic ash, blanketing surrounding communities and farmland. The ash cloud was not caused by an eruption but by a pyroclastic density current — a fast-moving flow of hot rocks, ash, and gases — triggered by the collapse of lava deposits on the volcano's slopes. Minor explosions had been occurring since January.

No deaths or injuries have been reported, but thick ash clouds severely reduced visibility and disrupted road traffic. Agricultural land in the affected area sustained damage, and five cattle were reported dead.

Mount Mayon, standing at 2,462 metres, is one of the 24 most active volcanoes in the Philippines and is widely recognised for its near-perfect conical shape, which makes it a popular tourist attraction. It is currently at Alert Level 3 on the country's five-level warning scale, with Level 5 indicating a life-threatening eruptive state.
