Galveston: Five people were killed and two others injured after a Mexican Navy aircraft crashed near Galveston, Texas. The small aircraft, which was transporting a patient, went down with eight people on board. According to the Mexican Navy, four of those on board were naval officers, and the remaining four included a child. The identities of the deceased have not yet been confirmed.

Following the accident, authorities said a search operation was launched in the sea off the Texas coast. Two of the passengers were members of the Michou and Mau Foundation, an organization that provides assistance to Mexican children suffering from severe burns. The US Coast Guard confirmed that the cause of the crash is under investigation. The crash occurred on Monday afternoon on the causeway near Galveston along the Texas coast, about 50 miles (80.5 kilometers) southeast of Houston. The Mexican Navy said it is assisting local authorities in the search efforts.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said on X that teams from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have arrived at the crash site. Galveston is a popular beach destination. It is not yet clear whether weather conditions caused the accident, but National Weather Service meteorologist Cameron Battiste said the area has experienced fog in recent days. Officials said there was fog around 2.30 pm on Monday, leading to reduced visibility.
