Jerusalem: A devastating wildfire erupted near Jerusalem on April 30, 2025, during Israel's National Memorial Day (Yom HaZikaron), prompting widespread evacuations, hospitalizations, and the cancellation of major national ceremonies.
The blaze began in the Eshtaol Forest, located between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, and rapidly spread due to strong easterly winds and dry conditions. By the evening of April 30, the fire had scorched over 12,000 dunams (approximately 1,200 hectares) of forested land, affecting multiple communities including Neve Shalom, Mesilat Zion, and Beit Meir. Highways 1, 3, 38, 424, 444, and 44 were closed, and train services between Jerusalem and Modi'in were suspended.
Over 160 firefighting teams, supported by 12 aircraft, were deployed to combat the blaze. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and emergency units joined the efforts, with helicopters dropping fire retardant and conducting aerial rescues. At least 18 individuals were hospitalized, including two pregnant women and two infants, while 10 others received on-site treatment. Approximately 7,000 residents were evacuated from affected areas.
Israel requested international aid, receiving commitments for firefighting aircraft from Italy, Croatia, and North Macedonia. Additional support was sought from France, Greece, Cyprus, and Bulgaria.

The wildfire forced the cancellation of Memorial Day ceremonies, including the national event at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. Independence Day celebrations were also postponed in several cities due to safety concerns.
The cause of the wildfire is under investigation, with authorities suspecting human involvement. Fire and Rescue Services Commissioner Dedi Simchi stated that the fire was caused by humans, but investigators do not know yet if it was arson or negligence. Environmental experts warn that climate change may increase the frequency and intensity of such fires in the region.
