6.2 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Western Japan; Aftershocks Shake Shimane

A 6.2 magnitude earthquake shook western Japan on Tuesday. According to official information, no tsunami warning was issued, and no major damage was reported. Japan Meteorological Agency said that the tremor was recorded at 10.18 am in Shimane perfecture at a shallow depth.


As per JMA, the same region was soon hit with aftershocks with magnitudes of 4.5, 5.1, 3.8 and 5.4.


Following the earthquake, authorities has confirmed that no abnormalities were detected at the Shimane nuclear plant. Parts of the Shinkansen bullet train network were suspended due to a power black out.


Media has reported that the military has nformed that they are conducting an aerial damage assessment and had established a disaster response liaison office.
